Isto, Isso and Aquilo. When do we use them?

\"Isto\" and \"isso\" mean this and are used only with things, never with people. We use ISTO when the subject of the conversation is closer to the person talking than to the person listening.

Example: Isto aqui no meu copo e' guarana'. Voce ja' experimentou?
This (here) in my glass is guarana’. Have you ever tried?

We use ISSO when the subject of the conversation is closer to the person listening than to the person talking.

Example: O que isso na sua mao? Chocolate?
What is this in your hand? Chocolate?

\"Aquilo\" means that and also is used only with things, never with people. We use AQUILO when the subject of the conversation is far from the person talking and to the person listening.

Example: O que e' aquilo, uma nave especial?
    What is that, a spaceship?
