    The words for why and because look the same. How do I use Por que, porque, por quê or porquê?

    Por que (separated without accent) is used in the beginning of a question.
    Por que você est á triste? — Why are you sad?

    Porque (together without accent) is used to answer questions.
    Porque meu time perdeu o jogo. — Because my team lost the game.

    Por quê (separated with accent) is used at the end of a question.
    Você está triste. Por quê? — You are sad. Why?
    Você está triste, ninguém sabe por quê. — You are sad, nobody knows why.

    Porquê (together without accent) is used when we are talking about a substantive. In Portuguese it always comes with an article or a demonstrative pronoun.
    Ninguém sabe o porquê da sua tristeza. — Nobody knows the reason of your sadness.
