Barretos, sometimes referred to as the Brazilian's Texas, is a city located in the northern part of the state of São Paulo. The city holds the most famous rodeo festival in the country, the Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro (Portuguese for "Cowboy Festival"). The huge festival is part rodeo, part state fair, part country-music festival and part spring break.Occurring every August 25, the festival coincides with the anniversary of the founding of Barretos.

In 1955 a group of bachelors organized the first recorded Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro in the city. Since its founding the festival has become world famous for its scale - more than 1 million people are expected to pass through the turnstiles during the 10-day event - and the high quality of cowboys, horses and bulls.

The festival has its origins in the transfer of cattle from pasturing in the nearby states of Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Mato Grosso to slaughterhouses in Barretos. A precursor to today's celebrations, the cowboys in the "entourages" that led the herds would meet in the afternoons and compete with each other to see who could ride the most spirited horses. The more difficult tradition of riding bulls instead of horses was brought from the United States of America.

The Barretos festival is now one of the most eagerly anticipated dates on Brazil's festival calendar. Its an obligatory stop not only for the nation's partygoers but also for Brazil's big advertisers, who pour more than $1 million into sponsoring the event.

Bruno e Marrone, Brazilian sertanejo duo.
Bruno e Marrone, Brazilian sertanejo duo.

Brazilian country music is known as Música sertaneja or Sertanejo. It is this style of music most often heard during the rodeos. The term originally referred to music from the Sertão ( a Portuguese term forbackcountry or backlands) and música caipira ("country people" music), but has since been influenced by many sources outside Brazil including American country music, Mexican mariachi, and the music of Paraguay. Many of its most popular practitioners are duos consisting of two brothers.

Cleansing Expo 2010 - Now through September 9

Cleasing Expo 2010 - Bembé do Mercado Exhibition. Photographer: Edgar de Souza.

The traditional party 'Bembé do Mercado', which celebrates the abolishment of slavery and takes place annually in Santo Amaro, BA (Brazil), is the subject of Edgar de Souza's Photo Exhibition. This is a traditional 'candomblé' celebration whose roots date to 1889. According to Souza, his images aim to show Brazilian integration, mainly in the region of Bahia. He adds: "The African and Portuguese cultural diversity is more evident in this part of the Country".

The exhibition is produced by Silvana Magda and is sponsored by The Brazilians Newspaper, The Palmares Foundation and Chashama Gallery. In 2009, 'Bembé do Mercado' celebrated the 121st anniversary of the abolishment of slavery in Brazil. This event often happens among other cultural activities, mainly religious rites such as 'candomblé', and music presentations. This exhibition has also been shown in Paris and Angola.

History and Tradition: On May 13, 1889, one year after the freeing of the slaves, the newly common citizens from Santo Amaro da Purificação wanted to celebrate the anniversary of this great milestone. Defying countless speech and other personal expression restrictions imposed on former slaves and their descendants, the black community decided to call upon the 'Candomblés' and 'play the drums' for three days to invoke the 'Orixás'.

For more information about this event, contact the Producer and General Coordinator Silvana Magda. Tel. (917) 528-815, Email:lavagemdarua46NY@aol.com
