PETAR
, short for Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (Alto Ribeira Tourist State Park) is a state park and nature preserve located in southern São Paulo State. The park is in a region containing the largest and best preserved area of the remaining Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. PETAR is set in the middle of this rainforest.

The region is famous for its caverns. There are almost 300 fantastic caves hidden in the forest, each one different from the next. A paradise for eco-tourists, the park offers enormous diversity in geologic formations, including grottos, caves, rivers and waterfalls. The park represents the largest concentration of caves in Brazil.

A good number of the caves are open to the general public, while others are restricted to spelunkers, and some are off limits to visitors. The caves can be as long as 6 kilometers, like The Santana Cavern, whose galleries create a complex maze. Because of its rainforest location, PETAR offers interesting treks along rivers and waterfalls in addition to the opportunity to explore the caves.

The park has infrastructure to receive visitors daily, though the best time to visit is during the winter, between July and October, when the weather is drier. Trekking, caving, flota-cross, camping, hiking and many other outdoor activities can all be practiced in the park.

Did You Know...?
The beach is one of many places that may invoke a feeling of saudade.
The beach is one of many places that may invoke a feeling of saudade.

Do you know what the Portuguese word saudade means? The dictionary provides two definitions: 1. longing, yearning (for someone), fond remembrance; 2. homesickness, nostalgia.

But saudade is more than these definitions suggest. It is a huge feeling that overpowers you that you just can't shake off. It is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure and well-being. The memory makes one relive the experience, and the feeling is bittersweet. You miss the good times, but remember them with a grin, laugh about the memories and let them fill you heart with a great intoxicating feeling. You feel happy that you have people and places to miss.

Three facts about saudade:

1. It was voted the most beautiful word of the Portuguese language, in a poll conducted by the Livraria Conde bookshop in Rio de Janeiro.

2. It was selected by the British company Today Translations as the seventh most difficult word to translate.

3. There is no direct translation for the word saudade in English.

For this upcoming event we will be showing the drama Era Uma Vez (Once Upon a Time in Rio).

Dé and Nina come from opposite worlds. He is a working-class guy who lives in the "favela"; she is a high-class student who lives in a bubble of wealth and so-called safety. Crossing all boundaries of Rio's social apartheid they end up falling in love at the common grounds of Ipanema Beach. Growing from the soul of a magical city, their true love will test every limit of a fractured society. A Brazilian version of Romeo and Juliet.
