January 2009
...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Here we are with the first edition of our 2010 newsletter. We hope you enjoy it.

In 2009 we organized a total of 59 events including bate-papos (relaxed conversation), samba, forró and zouk classes, Brazilian movie nights, capoeira batizado, and other events. We hope to have even more social, educational and cultural events in the new year.

Beginning this month you will notice a slight change in the newsletter format. Based on your feedback, we have decided to merge some articles and give a new face to the Brazil Station newsletter. The newsletter will continue to be a major source of information on Brazilian cultural events in New York.

Please continue providing your input about our newsletter and Brazilian culture news.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy and meaningful new year!

Visit Brazil: Jalapão

A beautiful view of Jalapão.

Jalapão
is a state park located in the central Brazilian state of Tocantins. The newest Brazilian state, Tocantins was formed in 1988 from the northern part of Goiás. Since its founding, Tocantins has been the fastest-growing state in Brazil. The rapidly growing agriculture and agro-industry based economy attracts immigrants from the rest of Brazil. The park's name comes from a combination of the words "jalapa," a bitter medicinal plant, and the Portuguese word for bread, pão, that locals eat with the plant to balance its bitter flavor.

Despite often being referred to as "Jalapão desert", the nickname can be misleading. The park more closely resembles an oasis, with many rivers, waterfalls and springs. Fauna abounds; the manned wolf, the pampas deer, the rhea, the great anteater, the jaguar and other regional species hide in the typical hinterland vegetation to escape the high temperatures. Jalapão is the perfect setting for eco-tourism and extreme sports.

Some examples of hand woven baskets made from the "golden grass," capim dourado.

Jalapão is home to the capim dourado. This "golden grass" sprouts only on the paths of Jalapão, and nowhere else.

The thin stem of the grass has an intense metallic shine and is used by local women to produce a variety of craft items. In their gifted hands the grass is turned into bags, earrings, bracelets, hats, baskets and various decorative objects. These beautiful and unique pieces have found a market outside Tocantins'borders, and are available throughout Brazil and abroad.
