2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro
Brazil celebrates its long sought-after selection as Olympic host city.
Brazil celebrates its long sought-after selection as Olympic host city.

Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For the first time in its 115 years, the games will be held in South America. The International Olympic Committee announced its historic decision on Friday, October 2. Brazil finally won the bid after prior attempts to host the 1936, 2004, and 2012 Games.

Rio's stunning beaches and famous landmarks, including the Sugar Loaf mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue, will provide a stunning backdrop for the games. The event will take full advantage of the city's natural beauty, experience in large events, and Rio's ability to put on a party that will thrill the world. In addition to the legacies of sports facilities and the volunteer program, the Rio 2016 Project proposes initiatives to develop organized sport in Brazil, South America, and the world.

On Rio's Copacabana beach, the cariocas, as Rio citizens are known, raised their arms to celebrate when the winning city was announced, frantically waving flags and hugging each other. Nearly 50,000 danced to samba as confetti was launched into the air. Officials unfurled a banner half the size of a football field with Rio's logo, an image of the Christ the Redeemer statue, and sent the message "Rio Loves You" to the world.

"For the Olympic movement, it will be an opportunity to feel the warmth of our people, the exuberance of our culture, the sun of our joy, and it will also be a chance to send a powerful message to the whole world: The Olympic Games belong to all peoples, to all continents, and to all humanity," said Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil.

Búzios, Rio de Janeiro
The postcard-perfect shoreline of beautiful Búzios.
The postcard-perfect shoreline of beautiful Búzios.

Armação dos Búzios, often referred to as just Búzios, is a resort town located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Búzios is a global village, where people from all over the world meet. Many visitors fall in love with the place, and decide to stay forever—in fact, many businesses there are run by foreigners.

The town's name comes from búzios, a type of small seashell which abound along the Brazilian coast. There are people who claim they can tell fortunes by throwing búzios and reading where they fall.

In the 1950s, Búzios was a secluded carioca beach retreat that was extremely difficult to reach. In the 1960s, French actress Brigitte Bardott discovered Búzios and helped transform it into a fashionable international tourist destination. Her statue still stands along the main street of Búzios, Rua das Pedras ("Street of Stones").

Today, it is one of the most sophisticated destinations in the country, offering very high quality services to meet the most demanding preferences of both national and international visitors. It has about 20 beaches of incomparable beauty and offers historical and cultural tours, as well as ecotourism. It's an excellent place to practice diving and perfect for those searching for peace along the day and an exciting night life.

The west coast beaches offer calm, clear waters while the east coast ones, facing the open sea, are wilder and draw the surfers and water sports enthusiasts.

A lively group discussion at Brazil Station.

We will have several new Group classes starting in the coming weeks. Other groups may also be formed based on demand.

1. Business Portuguese
The Português para Negócios (Business Portuguese) course is designed to help intermediate and advanced Portuguese speakers better relate with clients and colleagues. Just as in English, business in Brazil is conducted in a slightly different language than we use informally. From board meetings and client presentations, to networking lunches and dinner parties, the way you speak to associates and customers can influence the success of your interaction. The class will cover work-related situations and ways to address people in business contexts (use of formal language, presentations, writing messages, meetings, etc.).

Business Portuguese group class in Portuguese will start on Monday, October 19 at 8pm.

2. Música Brasil - Samba, Bossa Nova & MPB
The Música Brasil course will touch upon Brazilian popular music from the 1960s, '70s and '80s within the context of political and cultural movements. Taught by a Brazilian musician, this course will reveal that in Brazil, "traditional" is not the opposite of "modern." Students will gain insight into a culture that has succeeded in incorporating diverse ethnicities.

Música Brasil class in Portuguese will start on Thursday, October 15 at 8pm.

3. N1B - Beginner Level 1 group class will start on Thursday, October 15 at 6:15pm. It is for people with little or no knowledge of Portuguese.

4. N1BS - Beginner Level 1 group class for Spanish Speakers will start on Tuesday, October 13 at 8pm. It is for people fluent in Spanish and/or Italian with little or no knowledge of Portuguese.

5. N3BS - Beginner Level 3 group class for Spanish speakers will start on Wednesday, October 8 at 8pm. It is for people with a decent knowledge of Portuguese.

Contact us to assess your current level and to discuss your goals for learning at 646-287-6645 or Newsletter@BrazilStation.com.

We offer Private and Semi-private classes from Monday to Saturday. You can start taking classes with us at any day, any time. In addition to our traditional Portuguese classes, Brazil Station also offers Portuguese for Spanish and Italian Speakers, Business Portuguese, and Travel Classes. We teach off-site classes and Corporate Language Education as well.
