Visit Brazil: São Paulo
São Paulo is a city that will challenge your ideas about Brazil – a city that mixes colonial and cosmopolitan, quiet art galleries and raucous nightclubs. One of Brazil's most ethnically diverse metropolitan area, São Paulo is marked with influences of Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, African, Jewish, Arab, and Japanese culture, among others. São Paulo is a major cultural center and is home to the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), the "Pinacoteca do Estado" art museum, the São Paulo State Symphony, the Museum of Portuguese Language, the São Paulo International Film Festival, the Fórmula One Grand Prix racing circuit, and many other attractions. Paulista Avenue, São Paulo's main street, hosts the city's tourism center and major commercial district, and is a great place to start exploring the city by foot. Beautiful Ibirapuera Park, the city's central park and a must-see on any trip, is home to museums, a planetarium, bicycle and motorcycle circuits, and a convention center. São Paulo is also known for its varied and sophisticated cuisine. Some people visit the city just to dine out! The Jardins District is the center of the dining scene and the city's social circuit. Music-lovers can hear a variety of beats at the neighborhood's bars, pubs, lounges and discos. São Paulo and its rival Brazilian city, Rio de Janeiro, have often been compared to New York and Los Angeles respectively. If Rio has gained fame for its striking natural setting, São Paulo's fame lies in its people and its vibrant cultures - as well as its smog and pollution. São Paulo is cleaning up its reputation with its new "Clean City Law." Billboards and video screens were recently removed in an effort to reduce the amount of visual pollution. Life in Brazil: 2014 FIFA World Cup
Brazil's 2006 FIFA World Cup soccer team.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup - the 20th FIFA World Cup - is scheduled to take place in South America, and it looks like Brazil will be the host! The final decision will be made at the FIFA Congress in 2008.If approved, this will be the second time Brazil has held soccer's premiere competition. The country also hosted the 1950 FIFA World Cup. It will also be the first World Cup held in South America since Argentina 1978. Brazil would become one of only five nations to host the FIFA World Cup twice, joining Mexico, Italy, France and Germany. The choice of a South American country for 2014 breaks the well-established chain of allowing a European nation to host the World Cup Finals every eight years. South Africa is already set for the 2010 finals, and Brazil's confirmation for 2014 would create a twelve-year hiatus between Finals hosted in Europe.
