Visit Brazil: Jericoacoara
The pristine beaches and rolling dunes of Jericoacoara, Brazil.
The pristine beaches and rolling dunes of Jericoacoara, Brazil.
Jericoacoara - or "Jeri," as it is fondly known - is a small seaside community with a growing international reputation. Its seemingly endless beaches, sloping sand dunes, and freshwater lagoons draw people from around the world.

Jeri
is located in the state of Ceará, about 300 km west of the state capital, Fortaleza. Sitting on the northern-most tip of Ceará, Jeri's location provides views of both the east and west side of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors have the unique treat of watching the sun rise and set into the sea. This special geographic position is also what makes Jeri one of the windiest places in the world. It is a favorite Brazilian destination for kite-surfers and windsurfers, and a great place to get some serious jumps or an excellent introduction to the art of wave sailing. Adventurous visitors can also try sand boarding on the rolling dunes or take capoeira lessons on the beach. Or simply relax on a jangada, one of the traditional fishing boats, as you enjoy a tour of the coastline.

Jeri's
natural beauty is paired with a relaxed, unhurried pace of life. The sand-paved streets, lined with palms, provide a true escape from everyday stresses. Just 20 years ago, Jericoacoara was still a secluded and simple fishing village. There were no roads, no electricity, no phones, no TV's, no newspapers, and money was rarely used, with locals bartering fish for rice and other goods. As Jeri's popularity grows, the Brazilian government has taken care that the town remains unspoiled by development. In 1984, federal law declared Jericoacoara an "Environment Protection Area" (APA), and in 2002 the area was designated a national park, Brazil's highest level of environment protection.

Did You Know...?
Starting this month, we will feature intriguing events, customs, and people from Brazil. We start with an October holiday and look forward to introducing more fun facts about Brazil each month.

Children's Day

Every year on October 12,
Children's Day is celebrated in Brazil. Children receive special gifts and enjoy fun outings with family and friends. October 12 is also a religious holiday honoring Nossa Senhora Aparecida (Our Lady Aparecida), the patron saint of Brazil. Most people don't work, providing a great opportunity for parents to spend Children's Day with their kids. If you are in Brazil that day - or just need an excuse to have some fun - channel your inner child and have a good holiday!

The Films of Joaquim Pedro de Andrade
The 45th New York Film Festival includes a special showcase honoring director and screenwriter Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, a renowned member of Brazil's Cinema Novo movement of the 1950s and ‘60s. He solidified his place as a master filmmaker with his 1969 classic,
Macunaima, for which he won Best Film at the Mar del Plata Film Festival. Favoring a hard-edged expressionism meant to capture the realities of his nation's poverty, de Andrade established himself in 1965 with The Priest and the Girl, nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.  Joaquim Pedro de Andrade remained forever true to the core motto of Cinema Novo: "A camera in the hand and an idea in the head."
