    In comparing Brazilian Portuguese and American English, most words seem to fall into two categories: totally different or very similar. Some words, however, look the same but sound totally different. Here are some examples.

    Sports

    • Football — Futebol (foot-chee-bawl)
    • Ping pong — Ping pong (peen-gey pon-gey)
    • Basketball — Basquetebol (bass-keh-tchee-bawl)
